Let's SaveTheFoodture: our campaign in Belgium

Whenever you enter a supermarket… Special offer! Giveaway prices! Extreme deals! A good thing for you, the customer? Not quite, because excessively cheap food will cost us dearly. Ranging from the banana farmer in Senegal to the dairy farmer in Belgium: farmers all over the world are struggling to survive. With the “Let’s #SaveTheFoodture" campaign we challenge Belgian supermarkets. To look beyond low prices and to make sure sustainable food becomes an ordinary thing. We want quality food, produced with respect for the environment, that allows farmers a decent living … This is no luxury, but a necessity to ensure the future of our food and of millions of farming families.

On 15, 16 and 17 January, more than 8,000 volunteers will take to the streets of Belgium and sell a small gadget to support Vredeseilanden/VECO.

We let our supermarkets know we want a better deal for farmers! More than 75% of our food is purchased in supermarkets. That's why they have enormous power to lever positive change. Vredeseilanden asks for some concrete engagements: For example, make sure sourcing managers are not only evaluated on the lowest price deals they make with suppliers, but include labour conditions and environmental criteria. Furthermore, it is crucial to divide the risks and benefits in a fair way, to ensure that not only the farmer bears all risks.
